Saint Stephen’s parish has always sponsored a number of social events for members of the parish, but there was no parish organization charged with the responsibility for coordinating such events. This changed in June of 2000 when the St. Stephen’s Social Committee was formed. The committee consisted of 12 members, but many other parishioners have volunteered to help with specific events. The first social function organized by the committee was a family square dance, complete with a simple dinner in June of 2000. The next function was a Fall Harvest Pot Luck Supper, the first of what the committee hoped would become a series of successful annual events. There were word games for the adults and harvest crafts for the kids. The hall was decorated in a Thanksgiving theme, and the event was held on the last weekend of September. In November 2000, the committee organized a Veterans Reception for members of St. Stephen’s who had served in the military. The event featured entertainment by John and Mary Cronin from the band, Killarney. There has been a Veterans Reception every year since then, and it has grown each year. In 2001, the Grade 7 students in the religious education program performed, and Nick Neuls played the bagpipes. In 2002, the event included a display of WW2 memorabilia donated by the veterans themselves. All the while John and Mary have continued to come back to perform each year. On November 25, 2000 St. Stephen’s had its first Children’s Advent Craft Afternoon, and this has become an annual event also. Each year about ten tables of crafts have been available for the children to work on. In addition, they each receive a candy cane, an orange, and prayers before they leave. As many as 56 children have participated in the event. One of the most popular crafts is decorating angel or star cookies and getting to eat them right then and there. The committee has also organized a number of social events for the adults of the parish. In February 2001 there was a Valentine’s Dance. In March 2002 the Social Committee hosted a St. Patrick’s Dance followed by a Family 60’s dance in June. Everyone was asked to dress as they might have in the 60’s. The next Fall Harvest Supper was held in 2002, and was very well attended. In February 2003 we held another potluck supper to clean out the cupboards before Lent. It too was well attended. The Social Committee has also helped out at First Communion Receptions for the last few years. |
